The catalytic asymmetric Favorskii reaction is the addition of a metal alkynylide, generated in situ from a chiral metal catalyst, base, and terminal alkyne, to an aldehyde or ketone to afford chiral, enantioenriched propargylic alcohols. Catalysts containing zinc, copper, indium, and other metals have been employed to generate the corresponding metal alkynylides.
